Phase Two NOW OPEN!  Hundreds of enthusiastic cyclists braved the elements to be among the first to "Ride the Rock" at the Grand Opening of the Rock Island Trail - Phase 2, held Saturday, July 10, 2021 at the Truman Sports Complex Trailhead. Construction on Phase 2 began in late 2019.  This seven-mile extension begins at the Sports Complex, accessible through Gate 3 off Blue Ridge Cut-Off, with parking available in Lot L. From there, the trail runs through Raytown, where you will find a trailhead at the Raytown Chamber, 5909 Raytown Trafficway, and at 7130 Woodson Road. Along the way, you may want to stop for a refreshment at in Downtown Raytown!  Note: Free parking is available in Lot L at the Truman Sports Complex on non-game days.  On game days for both Chiefs and Royals, parking will be limited and subject to a fee.

The First Phase of construction of the Rock Island Trail was completed in June 2019. This phase of the trail is six and a half miles long. Continuing south, Phase 2 connects with the first phase near the historic Vale Tunnel and the 98th Street Trailhead (12600 E. 98th Street, KCMO).  From 98th Street the trail continues south to Lee’s Summit’s Hartman Park Trailhead (700 SW Pryor Road), before ending at Jefferson Street in southern Lee’s Summit.

Future Phases and Connecting to the Katy Trail.  Planning is underway to connect the southern terminus of the Rock Island Trail to the Missouri State Park Rock Island Spur of the Katy Trail. There is currently an eight mile gap between the southern end of the County’s Rock Island Trail, the City of Greenwood, and Pleasant Hill, Missouri in Cass County.  During 2017 and 2018, Jackson County convened a group of stakeholders to determine the best route to connect these two popular trails. This work produced a conceptual plan that will be implemented as funding allows. In 2019 Jackson County applied for and was awarded federal funding for the next one and a half miles of trail to connect to Hamblin Road in southern Lee’s Summit.  This project is currently in the planning phase, with construction expected to start by Spring of 2022.
