About the Center

When the Fort Osage Education Center opened in 2007, it represented a major addition to the cultural landscape of Jackson County. Built adjacent to the reconstructed Fort Osage National Historic Landmark, the Education Center was designed to augment programming for the thousands of students who participate in field trips and education programs at the historic Fort each year.
The award-winning design of the Fort Osage Education Center meets the highest standards of contemporary environmental architecture and engineering. Features such as a vegetative roof, low-water plumbing fixtures, ultra-efficient glazing, and an innovative ground-sourced radiant heating and cooling system help the Center achieve a Gold rating, as determined by the United States Green Building Council.

The Center has a permanent exhibit area that includes interactive exhibits on site geology, local flora and fauna of the early 19th century, Hopewell Indians, Osage Indians, Lewis and Clark, Fort Osage, and the Missouri River.

The Center also has special exhibit space, a classroom, meeting rooms, an auditorium, a conservation laboratory, and archival storage.
